Baseline Survey – [Farming] Technology Commercialization Research

Kwathu Smart Innovation Farms

The Kwathu Kollective initiative is conducting a research study to better understand how farmers make decisions, the challenges they face, and how digital tools can support better farming outcomes.

We are inviting farmers, farm managers, agricultural workers, and farming communities across Malawi to participate in this short survey.

Your feedback will help us build practical, farmer-centered solutions that improve productivity, planning, and resilience in agriculture.

About KSIF

The Kwathu Smart Integrated Farming [KSIF] initiative focuses on developing intelligent farming support systems that combine:

  • Data collection
  • Simulation models
  • Smart decision-support tools
  • Artificial intelligence technologies
  • Farmer-centered digital solutions

The long-term goal is to improve agricultural decision-making and support sustainable farming practices in Malawi and beyond.

Instructions

There are two surveys available.

Each survey is available in English and Chichewa

Please choose the language you are most comfortable using and complete both surveys.

Estimated time:

  • Survey 1: 10–15 minutes
  • Survey 2: 5–10 minutes

All responses will remain confidential and will only be used for research and development purposes.

Survey 1

Farming Operations & Decision-Making

This survey focuses on understanding how farming decisions are currently made throughout the farming process, from land preparation to harvest.

It explores:

  • operational workflows
  • farming challenges
  • decision-making processes
  • uncertainty points
  • and seasonal planning

Survey 2

Technology Validation & Commercialization

This survey focuses on understanding how farmers view agricultural technology and simulation-assisted farming tools.

It explores:

  • technology readiness
  • trust in farming technologies
  • willingness to use digital tools
  • accessibility preferences
  • data-sharing comfort
  • and willingness to pay for useful farming systems

We Appreciate Your Participation

Farming decisions are often affected by:

  • Changing weather conditions
  • Pest and disease outbreaks
  • Market uncertainty
  • Limited access to accurate information
  • Resource constraints such as fertilizer, water, and labor

Through this research, the KSIF initiative aims to collect clean, structured, and usable data that will help us:

  • Understand how farming decisions are currently made
  • Identify operational challenges and uncertainty points
  • Validate interest in simulation-assisted farming tools
  • Understand technology readiness and willingness to pay
  • Design smarter digital systems that support farmers in real-world conditions

Your experiences and opinions are extremely valuable.

By participating, you are helping researchers and developers understand the real challenges farmers face and contributing to the development of tools that could improve agricultural planning, productivity, and sustainability.
